“Green Apples” and “Squashes”, prints

I was new to oil pastel–before the “Green Apples” they felt like crayons and I never thought I’d get used to them, being so accustomed to chalk pastels. But it was the very differences that kept drawing me back–the brilliance of the colors, the quickness of a sketch, the ability to create “impasto”, or an actual thickness of the medium on the paper seen most often in oil paintings. My Granny Smiths were politely piled in their bowl, unaware that they were providing a great inspiration for me to do my first still life, and to do it in oil pastel as an experiment. I chose one of my favorite colorful 1940s cotton tablecloths featuring lemons and raspberries to drape over the little round table.

The original was purchased, and the woman who purchased it decided that she would like two paintings for the spot, identical in size, matting and framing and perhaps style. We discussed several subjects, but as the summer waned and she mentioned golds and earth tones, I knew it had to be squashes. One of my favorite vegetables to grow and to eat, they were just about ready to harvest, and their colors were perfect to create a piece to complement the Green Apples. She had incorporated a Jacquard pattern into some of the fabrics in her dining room, so I incorporated it into the background of the painting.

The originals were actually 12″ x 12″, but 8″ x 8″ is a nice size.

ABOUT THE PRINTS

These are signed digital prints or canvas prints of original oil pastel paintings at their original dimension, little square paintings.

I also sell these as individual prints, but this listing is for the set.

8×8 canvases are regularly $40 shipping included and I’m offering these $65.00 for the set shipping included.

8×8 digital prints are usually $22.50 each shipping included, but I’m offering these for $35.00 for both prints including shipping.

SHIPPING

Shipping within the US is included in all the prices listed. All shipping is via Priority Mail. Prints are shipped flat in a rigid envelope. Canvases are shipped in a box to fit with padding.

DIGITAL PRINTS

Digital prints are made on acid-free matte-finish natural white 100# cover using archival digital inks. While digital prints are not the quality of a giclee in capturing every nuance and detail of color, texture and shading, I am still very pleased with the outcome and usually only I as the artist, could tell where detail and color were not as sharp as the original.

The 5″ x 7″ and 8″ x 10″ digital prints are centered on 8.5″ x 11″ digital cover while the 11″ x 14″ has 1″ around the edges because the digital paper is 12″ wide. All are countersigned by me.

CANVAS PRINTS

I usually have at least one of the smaller sizes of canvases on hand, but order larger ones as they are ordered here because customers often want a custom size. Smaller canvases are a 3/4″ in depth, Canvases 12 x 16 and larger are 1-1/2″ in depth. If possible, as in the case of these two paintings, I set them up so that the excess outside of the margins of the painting, which I cropped off to frame, are used to wrap around the back of the canvas so that the sides have the image as well.

Small Canvas Prints of Artwork

The current collection of small canvas prints.

I like to have a selection of small canvas prints on hand and with the coming of the autumn shopping season I’m stocking up—plus, I get a great deal if I purchase several at once, and I can pass that on to you. I recently ordered these six canvas prints and look forward to ordering more. You can click on just about each one of them to go to the post on Etsy with the art, but I discovered I don’t have posts set up for “Waiting for Mom” and “After Dinner Nap”, two pretty popular ones! When I get those set up I’ll link them here.

You can find great deals on canvas prints all over the place and I’ve pursued them all. 8″ x 10″ prints can be difficult to find, and even though they’re small they’re not inexpensive, but they can, unfortunately, be “cheap”. Cheaply made, that is. These are consistently quality, and I can sell them for a more affordable price: $35 instead of the $50 it took to cover the cost of having the canvas made and having it shipped to me or having the canvas printed and stretching it myself. They’re pretty nice for that price.

And everyone makes them differently, different edge widths, different canvas wrap styles, different levels of quality in the thickness of the canvas…So after trying out a dozen companies I’ve settled on one for this size, and for 8″ x 8″, which I’ll also be offering with my square paintings.

Eventually I may try some tests with canvas in my new printer, but after working out the cost of the canvas paper and toner, and the stretchers, and the time, this is actually less expensive! If you’d like one I don’t have in stock it may take a week or so, though.

Some of these paintings you may recognize as daily sketches, and some are only 4″ x 6″, but they enlarge nicely. Some of the others are as large as 18″ x 24″, but they still hold detail when reduced and look nice at that size.

I sign each canvas near my signature that’s printed on the painting, usually in gold, silver or copper marker so it can be distinguished from my original signature. The copyright notice you see in white at the bottom of each of these photos does not appear on the canvas.

These can hang right on the wall, or you can drop them into a frame. If you just want them on the wall with no frame, I’ve also added finishing touches to the sides. When I photograph or scan a piece of artwork I include the rough edges, and when I make certain prints, like canvas prints, I include this if possible so it looks more authentically like a painting. As appropriate, each of the paintings extends around to the back, or if that doesn’t work it’s mirrored so it repeats the edges of the painting, or it has a coordinating color. Below is a gallery of the edges of each of these paintings.

A Trip to the Beach

I first saw the ocean at the age of 30 when I visited Assateague Island, Virginia and felt as if I’d come home to an old friend; I also enjoyed meeting the wild ponies after having read all the books in the Misty of Chincoteague series by Marguerite Henry (and closely studying the illustrations by Wesley Dennis) and read about the island and wildlife refuge.

I conspired how to make a living so I could stay there, but instead brought my photos back and have been painting from them ever since. I have a few originals left and in this heat wave I’m thinking of a trip to the beach where the breeze blows and I can run into the water and swim whenever I want.

“Blue Waves” is the last of a series of small paintings of ocean waves, executed as I experimented with watercolor techniques and materials. I wanted to capture the constant movement and sound of the waves, and in this case I used a spattering of opaque white to render the spray as the waves broke on the beach.

Also from that visit is “Sunset on the Bay“, depicting a view from Chincoteague Island across the Chesapeake Bay toward the mainland in Virginia. That stillness, that odd pink light of a sultry evening on the bay…the beach houses along the dock looked so puny and unprotected under that huge sky above and the water below that I took several photos in the days before panoramic images were available.

Later, I brought them out and laid them side by side on my drafting table and sketched the scene onto a full sheet of watercolor paper, not knowing how much of the sky and water I’d use and leaving plenty of extra. I was just experimenting with watercolor techniques and materials and knew I wanted the clarity of the details on the beach houses to contrast with the big sky and water.

Coming a little closer to home is a painting I painted on one of the beaches on Presque Isle in Erie, “Burnished Waves”.

The deepening light of evening and sunset burnishes all it touches with gold and silver, and always encourages a time of memory and reflection for me. I had spent the day on Presque Isle in Erie, playing in the water, collecting shells and rocks, photographing the woods and water, and finally settled on one of the beaches facing west to do some painting. Rain clouds rolled in as the sun dropped toward the horizon, deepening shadows and brightening highlights as I did my best to capture the rapidly changing light, the building clouds and lapping waves which grew as the wind increased. I can still feel the sand under my bare feet, dampness in my hair and remember standing there in my bathing suit feeling so connected to the scene after the day of taking it all in.

I matted and framed this painting when I finished it in 1999, but for many years it sat in my “extra paintings” box; there was something I just wasn’t happy with at the time. But when the time came for my annual poetry reading and art show in 2011 and nothing new fit what I was feeling in my poetry, I found this in the extras box and realized that when I painted it, I just wasn’t quite ready for its message.

This painting became the signature image for my fifth and final poetry reading and art exhibit at The Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall in January 2011 entitled “Burnished Light on Water”, featuring 12 new poems inspired by evening light and reflections, both physical and metaphoric, and an exhibit of paintings and photographs. My mother had been in personal care for years, was seriously ill through 2010 and passed just two days prior to when my reading was scheduled; I continued with it, including a brand-new poem dedicated to her, and knew why that painting had had to wait for me to appreciate it.

Evening on the Beach  is another work inspired by the beach at Assateague Island painted in 2000. I was back to a study of watercoloring and wanted to capture the changing sunlight on that late summer evening and experiment with all the new colors I’d found and techniques for painting sand and grasses.

This is a signed digital canvas print of an original watercolor painting, gallery-wrapped on wooden canvas stretchers. For this painting instead of painting the sides with black or another color, I left the original rough edges of my watercolor along with the pencil marks on the print and allow that to wrap around the sides, ready to hang or frame as you choose.

The original was only 6″ x 4″, but canvas stretchers are difficult to find smaller than 8″ so I make a slightly larger print and gallery wrap it. It is printed in archival inks on primed canvas, signed by the artist and wrapped and stapled on wooden canvas stretchers.

Serenity is a signed digital canvas print of an original pastel painting, gallery-wrapped on wooden canvas stretchers. For this painting also instead of painting the sides with black or another color, I left the original rough edges of my pastel on the print and allow that to wrap around the sides, ready to hang or frame as you choose.

This sailboat drifted lazily for hours on the calm waters of Lake Arthur in Western Pennsylvania. As the August afternoon tended toward evening, the sky began to grow pink and the shadows darkened and lengthened, and the serene moment seemed to last for hours.

Painted “en plein air” as I sat on one of the beaches at the north end of the lake, watching this sailboat was one of my favorite afternoons; this painting always takes me back to that day.

This painting is 16″ wide x 6″ high printed in archival inks on primed canvas, signed by the artist and wrapped and stapled on wooden canvas stretchers.

I have many others which you can find under “Waterscapes” on my website, though they are from an era when my photographic abilities and equipment weren’t quite where they are now. I hope to track them down and offer prints some day, but for now you can find these and others in my shop on Etsy.

Small Roses

Just one little sliver of sunlight crept through the blind and that was all it took to illuminate these old roses in a tiny glass vase. I stood in my kitchen and sketched this as quickly as possible before the light changed.

These are roses that I grow, am unbelievably bright pink pasture rose and an ancient deep red sweet-smelling climbing rose. Blooming plentifully in June, I placed them in an inexpensive glass bowl; they fall apart rather quickly but I still wanted to enjoy them indoors. I had prepared a number of drawing surfaces on old pieces of mat board, this being a combination of gesso and marble dust applied in a thick impasto, leaving deep brush marks for whatever I drew on it.

I sell a print of this as a signed digital canvas print of an original pastel painting, gallery-wrapped on wooden canvas stretchers with black paint covering the sides, ready to hang or frame as you choose. The original was 8″ x 6″, but canvas stretchers are difficult to find smaller than 8″ so I just make a slightly larger print and gallery wrap it. I can also make an original size print and wrap it around a piece of 1/2″ gatorboard. I can also make other size prints as well, and I offer it as a greeting card in one of my collections.
